Ohio Document Fees
Dealer May Charge a Document Preparation Fee
The document preparation fee must be clearly specified in writing by the dealer. While the fee does not require an itemized list of individual services, it must comply with specific regulations. The maximum document preparation fee that can be charged is determined by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and is based on the Consumer Price Index or 10% of the vehicle price, whichever is less.
Additionally, the document preparation fee is subject to sales tax.
How the Document Preparation Fee is Set
Each year, the BMV sets the document preparation fee, which is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The fee is adjusted annually on the last day of September.
