Ohio Vendors License

Before you become a licensed Ohio motor vehicle dealer you will need to apply for an Ohio Vendors License.

This is a step that must be completed BEFORE mailing in your dealer license application. You will also need to have your new Federal Employment Identification Number which will be necessary to create your vendor number.

An Ohio vendor’s license will allow you to log and pay the sales tax that you collect from your customer. Once you complete the application you will be assigned a Vendor Number which you will enter on your dealer license application.

You can click here to apply for an Ohio Vendor Number through the Ohio Business Gateway or you can apply for your Vendor Number through the County Auditor that your dealership is located in.

Before you can apply for a Vendor Number you will need to determine your North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code for your business. To determine your NAICS code visit http://www.census.gov/eos/www/naics

The Used Car Dealers NAICS code is 441120
The used Motorcycle, ATV, and all other motor vehicles the code is 441228

You will need these code numbers when applying for your vendor number. If selling both Used Cars and Motorcycles, ATVs and other motor vehicles just use the 441120 Used Car Dealers code.

If you would like to apply to for a vendor number through the mail you can log on http://www.tax.ohio.gov  but it will take at least 6 weeks to receive the information.
